At Munich’s Haus der Kunst, Italian designer Martino Gamper is presenting “Sitzung”, a playful installation poised between art and performance and a further evolution of the celebrated project “100 Chairs in 100 Days”.
With a title that means both “seating” and “meeting”, Martino Gamper has transformed the Mittelhalle of the German gallery into a lively and convivial social space in constant evolution. The exhibition invites the public to meet, rest and play with the chairs, with a view to reconfiguring the entire room periodically.
Fruit of ongoing research into new ways of bringing design into everyday life, Gamper’s work presents experimental chairs, well suited to their purpose but imperfect, while fostering the element of participation: the public themselves create the choreographic performance using the objects on display.
Selected from recycled materials, Dedar fabrics dress the seats and give them a new form and a new attire, in a constant interaction between design object and visitors.
“Fabrics that aren’t used anymore, they are industrial leftovers. Craftsmanship gives these materials a long-lasting use. Engaging with other designers and makers, I really wanted to kind of also learn from them and always understand how to dress this chair. I thought it was quite beautiful how these chairs got a new life somehow, a whole different feeling”, Martino Gamper.
The “dresses” have been made in partnership with Uta Sienkiewicz and Céline d’Oultremont.
